Antique Mauritanian powder glass murakad Kiffa beads where handmade by tribal women who used simple tools and who also utilized basic supplies such as ground European glass beads and other types of recycled glass. Antique Kiffa beads are very rare powder glass beads named after the Mauritanian city of Kiffa although these beads are locally called ìmurakad and where also made in several other towns located around Kiffa. These Kiffa beads where handmade one at a time using a tedious process and where made and worn by Mauritanian woman for spiritual reasons. These antique Kiffa beads where not made with profit in mind. The triangular shaped beads where worn as hair ornaments in sets of three and the diamond shaped beads sometimes referred to as turtles or lozenges were often sewn onto leather bracelets.
